EAST LANSING, Mich. — The 25th-ranked University of Iowa field hockey team defeated Michigan State, 7-1, Friday afternoon in East Lansing, Michigan.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Hawkeyes tallied three unanswered goals in the first half before Michigan State was able to get on the board. Sophomore Sophie Sunderland got the Hawkeyes going in the 8th minute, and senior Taylor Omweg scored a minute later off a cross from Melissa Progar giving the Hawkeyes an early, 2-1 lead. Freshman Mya Christopher gave the Hawkeyes a three-goal in the 16th minute off a pass from Nikki Freeman. Michigan State’s only goal came in the 32nd minute making the score, 3-1, at halftime.
Iowa continued its offensive attack in the 38th minute. Freshman Maddy Murphy found the back of the cage off of a penalty corner giving Iowa a 4-1 lead. Mallory Lefkowitz tallied the Hawkeyes fifth goal in the 50th minute from the top of the circle. Christopher got her second goal of the game in the 55th minute, expanding Iowa’s lead to, 6-1. Progar added the Hawkeyes seventh goal in the 62nd minute off of a pass from Lefkowitz to secure the, 7-1 victory.
