IOWA CITY, Iowa – Fans filled the UI Recreation building for the first time since February as the University of Iowa track & field team debuted its 2018 squad at its annual Black & Gold Intrasquad meet on Saturday.
It was a debut for many Hawkeyes in the condensed, 11-event meet, but was not short of excitement.
TOP PERFORMERS
Senior Sheridan Champe started the intrasquad with a statement in the 60 meters. Her 7.61 won the preliminary race and set a new personal best. She followed with a win and personal best in the 300 meters with a time of 38.66.
Two newcomers on the men’s side – freshmen Tyree Sorrells (60 meters) and junior college transfer Karayme Bartley (300 meters) – showed they are ready to contribute to the team with top finishes in their respective events.
Sorrells ran toe-to-toe with senior O’Shea Wilson to clock the fastest time in the preliminaries (6.87).
Bartley finished second in the 300 meters to junior Mar’yea Harris by .01 as they both set facility records going 32.97 and 32.96, respectively.
Tia Saunders returns for her sophomore season to lead the Iowa women’s middle distance crew and she continued to show improvement. Saunders set a nine second personal best in the 1,000 meters with a time of 2:55.88.
QUOTING COACH WOODY
“I saw a lot of great things today,” UI director of track and field Joey Woody said. “We’ve been training at a really high level, but when you put the uniform on and hear the gun, you don’t know how they will compete. We saw some really good things about how people came out and competed. That’s what this is all about. It’s about coming out, going head-to-head, and competing at a high level. I was really impressed with the 300 meter runners, the 600 meters, and the hurdlers. We had some PRs in the hurdles which is exciting because it is such a technical event.”
