IOWA CITY, Iowa — The University of Iowa women’s tennis team swept its doubleheader on Sunday against Marquette and Bradley at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex. The Hawkeyes defeated Marquette, 7-0, and Bradley, 6-0, to extend their record at 4-0 at home and 6-3 overall.
IOWA VS. MARQUETTE: HOW IT HAPPENED
The Hawkeyes got their first doubles win from senior Zoe Douglas and freshman Yufei Long by defeating Paula Tormos and Natalija Popovic, 6-2, at the No. 1 doubles position.
Sophomore Elise van Heuvelen and junior Adorabol Huckleby clinched the point by beating Lesley Foe and Milica Novakovic, 6-2, at the No. 2 position. Seniors Anastasia Reimchen and Montan Crawford completed the doubles matches with a win over Fleur Eggink and Andrea Amortegui, 6-4.
Van Huevelen got Iowa started in singles with a straight-set win at the No. 1 position over Popovic, 6-1, 6-1. Douglas followed by defeating Novakovic at the No. 3 position, 6-3, 6-3.
Reimchen battled through a tough first set to come out on top over Amortegui ay the No. 4 position, 7-6 (7-5), 6-0 to secure the win for the Hawkeyes. She trailed 6-5 in the first set before rattling off eight straight games, including the first-set tiebreaker.
“It was a tough set, I just had to really dig deep to close that tie-breaker out,” said Reimchen. “I was focusing on making less errors, being consistent and in the second set I just played my game and she had no chance.”
Huckleby defeated Isabella Franks in straight sets, 6-1, 6-3, at the No. 5 position. One point later, Long topped Tormos, 6-1, 6-4 at the No. 2 position, extending her season record to 8-0.
Crawford put the icing on the cake with a straight-set win over Foe, 6-3, 6-4, at the No. 6 position.
IOWA VS. BRADLEY: HOW IT HAPPENED
Reimchen and Crawford got the Hawkeyes started in doubles for the second match with a win against Victoria Gonzalez and Kinga Kovacs, 6-1, at the No. 3 position.
Douglas and Long beat Sandra Maletin and Alejandra de Lasa at the No. 1 position, 6-2, to extend their record together to 5-1 and secure the doubles point for the Hawkeyes.
Van Heuvelen and Huckleby grabbed a 6-0 victory over Malini Wijesinghe and Alexa Brandt at the No. 2 position.
Douglas earned the first singles win for the Hawkeyes by defeating Brandt at the No. 3 position in straight sets, 6-0, 6-1. Huckleby then earned a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Gonzalez at the No. 4 position.
Crawford shutout Kovacs at the No. 5 position, 6-0, 6-0, to clinch the second win of the day for the Hawkeyes.
Van Heuvelen grabbed a 6-2, 6-3 win over Wijesinghe at the No. 2 position.
Long finished out the match with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Maletin to extend her record to 9-0.
“I am really happy about that, and I am excited to keep playing,” said Long. “We play Notre Dame and Northwestern next weekend, and they are both good teams so they are going to be tough matches. We just have to play really tough and give everything we have.”
Reimchen and her opponent both forfeited their match, which resulted in no score for either team.
