FULLERTON, Calif. – The University of Iowa softball team fell to Stanford, 3-2, in nine innings on Friday at the Judi Garman Classic.

The Hawkeyes erased a one-run deficit after the first inning and held a one-run lead in the eighth, but the Cardinal pushed across runs in the bottom of the eighth and ninth innings to earn the win.

Sophomore pitcher Allison Doocy (2-3) struck out eight in 8.2 innings. She allowed just one earned run and scattered six hits and three walks.

The Hawkeyes (4-6) trailed 1-0 after one inning before freshman Aralee Bogar tripled and scored to tie the game in the third. The game remained tied until the top of the eighth, when sophomore Devin Cantu knocked in junior Mallory Kilian to give Iowa a 2-1 lead.

The Hawkeyes were unable to pick up another run in the ninth and the Cardinal (12-7) grabbed the victory in bottom half of the inning with a sac fly to left.

NOTABLES

  • Five different Hawkeyes recorded hits.
  • Doocy threw eight strikeouts, bringing her season total to 34 and her career total to 153.
  • The start of the game was delayed one hour, 15 minutes due to rain.
  • Cantu picked up her fifth RBI of the season.

QUOTING HEAD COACH MARLA LOOPER
“Early on we had plenty of chances to capitalize on base runners and put runs across. We watched a lot of pitches go by so attacking pitches in the zone early would have benefitted us. Defensively, it was a great ball game. Doocy had a number of key strikeouts. I’m proud of how the team continued to stay in the game.”

MOTHER NATURE STRIKES IN GAME 2
Following multiple rain delays, the Hawkeyes’ opening day of the Judi Garman Classic came to a premature end when rain cancelled Game 2 against Cal-State Fullerton. The game was tied 1-1 after two innings.
