Hawkeyes End 19 Year Drought, Defeat Notre Dame, 5-2

NOTRE DAME, Ind. — The University of Iowa women’s tennis team defeated Notre Dame, 4-2, on Saturday at the Eck Tennis Pavilion in Notre Dame, Indiana.
 
The Hawkeyes earned the doubles point and won four singles matches to top Notre Dame for the first time since 1999.
 
Sophomore Elise van Heuvelen and senior Anastasia Reimchen paired up to get Iowa started with a 6-2 win at the No. 2 doubles position over Cameron Corse and Zoe Spence.
 
38006At the No. 1 position, senior Zoe Douglas and freshman Yufei Long secured the doubles point with a 6-4 win over Brooke Broda and Allison Miller.
 
Notre Dame tied the match when Reimchen dropped her singles match to Spence, 6-3, 6-2 at the No. 4 position.
 
Douglas grabbed Iowa’s first singles win over Corse, 6-2, 6-3, at the No. 3 position to give the Hawkeyes a 2-1 lead. Junior Adorabol Huckleby extended that lead to 3-1 by defeating Chong in straight sets, 6-1, 7-5, from the No. 5 position.
 
Notre Dame pulled within one, 3-2, when Crawford lost to Ally Bojczuk, 6-2, 6-5, at the No. 6 position, but the Hawkeyes closed with consecutive wins at the top two singles spots.
 
Long forced a third set tiebreaker to defeat Broda, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4, at the No. 1 position to clinch the win.
 
Van Heuvelen extended the winning margin by defeating Miller in a third set tiebreaker, 6-7 (5-7), 7-6 (8-6), 10-5.
