FULLERTON, Calif. — The University of Iowa softball team dropped a 3-2 decision to Cal Poly in day two action at the Judi Garman Classic.
Both teams were scoreless through two and a half innings before the Hawkeyes took the lead. Junior Mallory Kilian doubled before scoring off senior Allie Wood’s homer, giving Iowa a 2-0 advantage.
Cal Poly responded in the top of the fourth, scoring on a wild pitch. The Mustangs took the lead in the sixth when Hailey Martin hit a two-run shot to right.
Freshman pitcher Lauren Shaw fell to 1-3, allowing three earned runs on eight hits in 6.1 innings pitched.
NOTABLES
- Wood’s home run was her second of the season and the 14th of her career. It was also her fifth RBI this year.
- Freshman Aralee Bogar is 8-for-8 on stolen base attempts this season. She sits at fifth in the Big Ten in stolen bases.
- Four Hawkeyes — Kilian, Bogar, Wood, and Cheyenne Pratt — collected hits in the game.

“When we go up 2-0 we’ve got to do a better job of not giving the other team free bases and giving momentum away. That’s really where the game was lost. We had plenty of chances to do things offensively and we didn’t capitalize.
As far as cancelations go, things are out of our control. We need to focus on the things that are in our control. In game two we came out and had great energy. We talked about fighting. Not fighting for just a win, but fighting because we’re standing up for something. We love what we do and we’re fighting for the women to the left and right of us. If we show up and play because we’re waiting for the reward at the end then we aren’t playing for the right reasons. We need to step on the field and battle. We were doing that in the second game today and that’s exactly my point. There was no reward. It was just done. Did we fight? Yes. But we need to keep that fire in our belly and be ready to play against a really good Baylor squad tomorrow. If the team that was on the field tonight steps in the field against Baylor tomorrow it’s going to be a heck of a ball game.”
DARKNESS STRIKES IN GAME 2
Iowa’s second game of the day against No. 17 Louisiana-Lafayette came to a premature end when a light went out on field two. The decision was made to end the game when the lack of lighting caused shadows in the outfield. The Hawkeyes were leading 2-0 after four innings.
