IOWA CITY, Iowa — Western Illinois’ go-ahead run in the top of the eighth gave the visiting Leathernecks a 2-1 victory over the University of Iowa softball team Tuesday night at Pearl Field.

WIU’s Hailey Duwa fired up the Leathernecks with a one-out solo shot over the right field fence in the top of the seventh for the game’s first hit and run.

The Hawkeyes evened the contest in the bottom frame when sophomore Brooke Rozier smacked a two-out pinch hit double to left center. She scored on an RBI single up the middle off the bat of senior Angela Schmiederer. Rozier’s double ended WIU pitcher Emily Ira’s no-hitter bid.

Freshman Lauren Shaw took the loss, allowing one run on two hits in one inning of work. She had one strikeout and no walks. Sophomore Allison Doocy started the game in the circle for the Hawkeyes, striking out nine batters, while allowing just one run and one hit in seven innings.

QUOTING HEAD COACH MARLA LOOPER
“Allison threw a heck of a game and it’s unfortunate we couldn’t give her any run support in an outing like this. We let Western Illinois stay in the game and we didn’t make the adjustments we needed to early. We now have two days to practice and fix the things that weren’t good tonight before getting after Illinois this weekend.”

RECORDS UPDATE
Iowa: 19-22
Western Illinois: 14-22
