AMES, Iowa — The University of Iowa softball team dropped a 4-2 decision to Iowa State Wednesday afternoon in the annual Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series game at the Cyclone Sports Complex.

The Hawkeyes jumped on Iowa State early, plating two runs in the top of the first. Sophomore Lea Thompson hit a leadoff single and stole second during Aralee Bogar‘s at-bat. The freshman reached base on a walk and the pair scored on a single by senior Angela Schmiederer.

The home team responded in the bottom frame, scoring two runs on two hits against Iowa’s Allison Doocy. The Cyclones scored two unearned runs in the third to go ahead, 4-2. Iowa saw four more runners reach base, but were unable to score any more runs.

Schmiederer led the Hawkeyes at the plate going 2-for-3 with a single, a triple, and two RBIs.

Doocy (12-12) took the loss in the circle. The sophomore allowed two earned runs on four hits and struck out three in four innings. Kenzie Ihle pitched two scoreless innings in relief, striking out one and yielding only one hit.

Iowa’s loss gives Iowa State two points in the Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series. Iowa currently leads Iowa State, 13-12, with two academic points to be decided in May.

QUOTING HEAD COACH MARLA LOOPER
“Iowa State did a good job of making adjustments in the circle and unfortunately we did not make those adjustments with them. We gave away a few pitches that we should’ve either taken advantage of or let go. (Kenzie) Ihle did a great job coming in, changing tempo on them, and letting us get through the rest of the innings clean.”
