IOWA CITY, Iowa — Junior Natalie Winters’ first career two-goal game and redshirt freshman Josie Durr’s game-winner on her first career goal sent the University of Iowa soccer team to a 3-1 victory over Central Michigan on Friday night at the Iowa Soccer Complex.
The victory moves the Hawkeyes to 3-0-1 this season.
Iowa fell behind for the first time this season in the 10th minute when the Chippewas’ Sheila Magnan beat Iowa goalkeeper Claire Graves. The goal was the first surrendered by the Hawkeyes this season.
The Hawkeyes scored the equalizer in the 33rd minute off a corner kick. Senior Morgan Kemerling headed the corner before Winters collected the ball just inside the 18 and fired the attempt past Morgan Britain. It was her second goal of the season.
After going into the half tied at one, Iowa took its first lead in the 61st minute on Durr’s first career goal. Freshman Sara Wheaton sent a free kick into Iowa’s half from midfield where Emma Tokuyama headed the ball to Durr. The Solon, Iowa, native got a touch and sent it into the upper third to give Iowa the 2-1 lead.
Durr set up Iowa’s final goal in the 67th minute when she fired a shot on goal, but Britain couldn’t secure the save. Redshirt junior Kaleigh Haus was then fouled going for the rebound, setting up Winters’ second goal. She blasted a penalty kick — her second of the season — to give Iowa a 3-1 lead.
OFFENSIVE NOTES
– After scoring two goals in their first three games, the Hawkeyes erupted for a season-high three strikes. Durr, who made her first career start, became the third Hawkeye to score this season.
– Winters had four career goals entering the 2018 season. The Michigan native has three of Iowa’s five goals this season.
OF NOTE…
– Junior Claire Graves finished with two saves en route to her third victory of the season. Graves’ scoreless streak ended at 299:49 when Central Michigan scored in the 10th minute.
QUOTING HEAD COACH DAVE DIIANNI
“Josie was a tactical decision. We thought we could expose some spaces between their mids and backs. Josie is very technical and can hold the ball well up top, she has been training well. Minutes that are given in the game come from practice and she has been training well in the past week.
“Our defenders played well. They don’t do a lot of work because they do not get exposed out wide, even though it is 90 minutes. There is a lot of experience between Sarah, Morgan, and Hannah. They were doing a great job of keeping Central Michigan in front of them.”
