Hawkeyes Fall to Iowa State, 2-1

The University of Iowa soccer team fell to Iowa State, 2-1, in the opening contest of the Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series on Friday night at the Cyclones Sports Complex.

AMES, Iowa — The University of Iowa soccer team fell to Iowa State, 2-1, in the opening contest of the Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series on Friday night at the Cyclones Sports Complex.
 
The loss was the Hawkeyes’ first of the season, dropping the team’s record to 4-1-1.
 
After the Hawkeyes brought the early pressure, Iowa State countered with a goal in the seventh minute courtesy of a goal from Kasey Opfer.
 
Iowa had a chance for the equalizer in the 31st minute when on an attempt by freshman Hailey Rydberg, but Cyclone goalkeeper Dayja Schwichtenberg made the save. In the 35th minute, Iowa State’s Taylor Bee pushed the lead to 2-0.
  
The Hawkeyes came with more intensity in the second half and they closed the gap to 2-1 just 37 seconds into the second half.  Redshirt junior Kaleigh Haus scored her first goal of the season.  
 
Iowa out-shot the Cyclones, 10-6, in the second half, but couldn’t come up with the equalizer. 
 
Redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Cora Meyers suffered the loss in her first career start.  She made four saves in the contest.  
  
OF NOTE

  • Junior Devin Burns played 34 minutes in her season debut.  Burns missed Iowa’s first five games with a meniscus injury.
  • Iowa out-shot the Cyclones,16-13, in the match and had 15 corner kicks to nine for Iowa State.

“There’s great disappointment in our locker room right now losing tonight’s game. The team played very well in all areas except winning the set piece battle and unfortunately that was too much to overcome. This is a group that continues to improve and get better every day and we will do that once again from tonight.”

Iowa travels to Laramie, Wyoming, to face Wyoming at 1 p.m. (CT) on Sunday at the Madrid Sports Complex.
