Hawkeyes Dominate Doubles at Big Ten Indoor Championships

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — University of Iowa men’s tennis student-athletes competed in day two of Big Ten Indoor singles and doubles tournament winning a total of six matches (two singles and four doubles). Iowa won a Big Ten-best four doubles matches. 

 
Saturday morning started with the Hawkeyes dominating the doubles competition. Oliver Okonkwo and Will Davies outlasted Penn State’s Lakoselijac/Antonopoulos (8-7). Joe Tyler and Piotr Smietana won the Flight B bracket. Tyler and Smietana battled Tishman/Brown of Michigan (8-7). In the championship match they defeated Dean/Nortey of Nebraska (8-4). Jonas Larsen and Nikita Snezhko kept the Hawkeyes’ rolling in doubles, bouncing Nebraska’s Gleason/Moreno (8-2). Okonkwo and Davies dropped their final match to Kobelt/Trotter of Ohio State (8-6).
 
In the singles Round of 16, Davies was the lone Hawkeye to advance. Davies defeated Michigan’s Harrison Brown in a hard-fought three set match (6-7, 6-4, 6-4). Tyler was outlasted by Gabe Tishman of Michigan (7-6, 6-4). Smietana fell to 86th-ranked Dominik Stary of Northwestern (7-5, 6-4), who ultimately won the tournament. Larsen and Okonkwo also lost in straight sets.
 
In the quarterfinals, Davies was bested by Tim Siebert of Ohio State in a third set heartbreaker (6-2, 6-7(5), 7-5). Siebert was the top-seeded singles player in the tournament.
 
In consolation play, Jason Kerst defeated Nebraska’s Gleason in straight sets (6-4, 7-5). Snezhko dropped his last match of the afternoon.
