Hawkeye Fan Shop — A Black & Gold Store | 24 Hawkeyes to Watch 2018-19 | Hawk Talk Monthly — November

IOWA CITY, Iowa — Two University of Iowa field hockey student-athletes – Katie Birch and Maddy Murphy – earned NFHCA All-American status, the National Field Hockey Coaches Association announced Tuesday. Birch, a junior midfielder, was named to the second team, while Murphy, a sophomore forward, was named to the third team.

The two Hawkeyes become the 91st and 92nd national All-Americans in program history. It’s Birch’s second national All-American honor, and Murphy’s first.

Birch led the Hawkeyes with a career-high 10 assists and eight goals for 26 points. The York, England, native was also a key part of Iowa’s defense that allowed only 23 goals in 21 games. Birch was named to the NFHCA first team All-West regional team earlier this month, while also being a second team All-Big Ten selection.

Murphy recorded a team-leading 13 goals and 33 points, both of which ranked top-five in the Big Ten. A Raina, Tasmania, native, Murphy also earned first team NFHCA All-West and first team All-Big Ten honors for her outstanding play.
