No. 16 Iowa Shuts Out Indiana in B1G Opener for 6th Straight Win

IOWA CITY, Iowa — The University of Iowa field hockey team recorded its fourth straight shutout and sixth straight win in a 3-0 victory over Indiana on Sunday at Grant Field. The Hawkeyes move to 7-1 and 4-0 at home on a memorable Alumni Weekend where Iowa field hockey’s storied tradition was celebrated.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
Iowa was on the offensive all game and scored first with 12:46 on the clock in the first half. Mya Christopher registered her first goal of the season when she redirected a pass from freshman Lokke Stribos, who was credited with her third assist of the season. The Hawkeyes registered nine shots and four corners in the first half to lead 1-0 at the break.
 
In the second half, Iowa put up 12 more shots that led to two goals. Sophomore Maddy Murphy scored her team-leading seventh goal in the 47th minute on a redirect from junior Katie Birch, who was credited with her team-leading sixth assist of the season. Freshman Anthe Nijziel scored a goal in her third consecutive game off one of Iowa’s nine penalty corners. Nijziel scored in the 57th minute on an assist from Sophie Sunderland. Indiana registered their only shot of the game with three minutes left to play.

“Our back three — Isabella Brown, Anthe Nijziel, and Lokke Stribos were outstanding. Really the whole team was. I’m proud of our effort. I’m looking forward to our next Big Ten game. To be able to be honor Dr. Grant — we could honor that woman every day — it was special to have her here. She brought us all here. It was great to be able to honor her, have so many woman show up, be able to rekindle our alums together, and have some fun.”
 
HAWKEYE NOTABLES

  • Iowa has had four straight shutouts for the first time since 2000.
  • The Hawkeyes are 7-1 for the first time since 2011.
  • The Hawkeye defense only allowed six shots and six penalty corners in two games this weekend.
  • Ten different Hawkeyes registered a shot in today’s game against Indiana.
  • Junior goalkeeper Leslie Speight recorded her fourth straight shutout for a total of five on the year. Speight has only allowed four goals in eight games this season with a .875 save percentage.
  • Maddy Murphy scored her team-leading seventh goal of the season to record her team-leading 18th point of the season. Murphy has scored in all but two games this season.
  • Katie Birch has six assists in the last five games.
  • Mya Christopher scored her first goal of the season in the first half.
  • Anthe Nijziel has scored in three straight games dating back to Sept. 9 against New Hampshire
