LINCOLN, Nebraska — University of Iowa senior Tria Simmons and junior Jenny Kimbro broke an 11-year-old pentathlon record and Laulauga Tausaga broke the weight throw record on day one at the Frank Sevigne Invitational.
Over in South Bend, Indiana, senior Mar’yea Harris ran a personal best 600 meters at the Meyo Invitational.
“It was an unbelievable day,” Iowa Director of Track and Field Joey Woody said. “When you look at what we did in the multi-events to start the day, they got the energy going. Then you see what Laulauga did at the end of the day, it was impressive all around.
“At Meyo, we had some great distance races today. I thought they competed extremely well. We had exceptional performances including the school record from Mar’yea in the 600 meters. That whole event group did really well tonight. I’m looking forward to tomorrow.”
Former Hawkeye pentathlete Tammilee Kerr set the previous record with 3,974 points in 2008. Simmons won the event with 4,220 points, and Kimbro finished second with 4,123 points.
The pair collectively broke seven of their personal bests. Simmons broke her 60-meter hurdles (8.55) personal best to move onto the top-10 all-time list (ninth). She move up to fourth all-time in the high jump (1.78 meters, 5-11.25). She also improved her shot put mark to 1.54 meters (37-10 1/2). Kimbro improved to second all-time in the 60-meter hurdles, finishing in 8.27 seconds, and she improved her personal best marks in the high jump (1.72m, 5-8 3/4), shot put (11.22 meters, 36-9 3/4), and 800 meters (2:20.11).
Tausaga broke the weight throw record for the third time this season on her first throw with a 22.51-meter mark (73-10 1/4). She bettered that in the second round with a long throw of 23.26 meters (76-3 3/4).
Harris set the 600-meter record in 1:16.60 at the Meyo Invitational. Iowa runners placed one through nine in the race, including two unattached competitors, in a field of 21 athletes.

The Hawkeyes compete on Saturday at the Frank Sevigne Invitational starting with the multi-events at 9:30 a.m. (CT). Field and running events begin at 11:30 a.m. The Meyo Invitational will start with the women’s 3,000 meters at 9:15 a.m.
