TEMPE, Ariz. — University of Iowa junior Laulauga (LAU-long-uh) Tausaga won the discus competition and bettered her personal record at the Sun Belt Classic on Saturday, expanding the school record to 61.74 meters (202-6).

“Laulauga had a big time throw in the discus,” Iowa Director of Track and Field Joey Woody said. “Coming off yesterday’s hammer throw, I thought she had a great weekend. Her shot put wasn’t her greatest, but I know she’s got it in her to put up some big marks there too.”

Junior Jenny Kimbro ran her fastest 400-meter hurdles in 58.27 to rank fourth all-time at Iowa.

“Jenny Kimbro ran phenomenally in her second 400-hurdles race ever,” Woody said. “To go out and run at that level and be top-five all-time at the University of Iowa, I’m very proud of what she’s done.”

Fellow junior Matt Manternach ran his career fastest 800 meters (1:47.84), moving up two spots to rank fifth on Iowa’s all-time list.

“Matt Manternach looked a lot like where he was at this point last year. He’s really starting to do some great things,” Woody said. “He set himself up last year at the regional meet to punch his ticket to outdoor Nationals. Now, he’s in the 1:47 ranks, and 1:46 is right there. He’s had a tremendous season so far.”

The Hawkeyes went 2-3-4 in the men’s 400 meters. Junior Karayme Bartley ran 45.83 to break onto the top 10 list at sixth, senior Mar’yea Harris had the next fastest time of the day, coming in at 45.83, and freshman Wayne Lawrence Jr. recorded the seventh fastest time at Iowa, finishing in 45.96.

“The event of the night was the men’s 400 meters,” woody said. “We had three guys run 45 seconds, and to have that on one team, let alone in one race, is really impressive. We’re excited to put those three plus someone else on the 4×400-meter relay to see what we can do. I think we have a team that could shoot to break three minutes by the end of the season.”

The all-time movement continued with sophomore Konstadina Spanoudakis (discus) and freshman Anthony Williams (110-meter hurdles), breaking onto Iowa’s all-time lists, both ranking ninth in their respective events. Spanoudakis threw 53.72 meters (176-3), and Williams ran 13.86.

“Konstadina got a big personal best in the discus,” Woody said. “She just keeps moving up the ranks there, and that is fun to watch.

“Anthony Williams is still a work in progress with some of the technical stuff, but that guy has got some wheels. He has proven that he’s one of the best hurdlers in the conference.”

The Hawkeyes added two individual wins from senior Briana Guillory, who won the women’s 400-meter premiere in 51.92, and freshman James Carter, who won the men’s triple jump, jumping 15.06 meters (49-5).

“We had some great events that are going to help our teams continue to elevate in the Big Ten and at the national level.”
