NORMAN, Okla. – The University of Iowa women’s tennis team found success early, winning all three doubles matches in the round of 64 at the ITA Central Regional Championship.
The team of senior Elise van Heuvelen Treadwell and junior Danielle Bauers defeated Amano/Ochotarena from the University of North Dakota, 8-4. Freshman Erika Dodridge and junior Danielle Burich beat Tupper/Vizcardo from Southern Illinois University – Edwardsville, 8-3. Sophomore Michelle Bacalla and junior Ashleigh Jacobs defeated Davtyan/Poppe from Tulsa, 8-7 (2).
In the singles round of 128 Burich defeated Shura Poppe from Tulsa, 6-2, 7-6 (3). Jacobs was victorious against Oleksandra Nahurska from Oral Roberts University, 6-3, 7-6 (4). Bacalla fell to Liam Benedejcic of Tulsa 6-1, 6-1.
In the round of 64 van Heuvelen Treadwell defeated River Hart from Minnesota, 6-2, 6-4 to advance to the round of 32. Jacobs lost to Rosanna Maffei from Kansas State University, 6-4, 6-0. Burich fell to Sofia Smagina from Kansas 6-0, 6-3.
In a consolation match Bacalla defeated Nahurska from Oral Roberts 6-1, 6-2.
In matches set up outside of the draw, Dodridge beat Bella Lampert from Minnesota 6-4, 6-1. Bauers defeated Lucia de Santa Ana from Minnesota, 5-2, retired.
“We had a better day today,” said head coach Sasha Schmid. “It was good to see all three doubles teams advance to tomorrows round of 32. Michelle and Ashleigh battled for an exciting doubles win in a tiebreaker over Tulsa. It was also great to see that after qualifying yesterday Danielle Burich had a solid first round main draw win this morning. I am looking forward to doubles and Elise playing in the round of 32 in singles tomorrow.
The Hawkeyes continue action Saturday at 8 a.m. (CT).
