ELKHORN, Neb. — Senior Benton Weinberg outlasted classmate Alex Schaake in a playoff to capture the individual title at The Harvest contested this weekend at the par-72 Indian Creek Golf Course. Weinberg and Schaake were two of eight University of Iowa men’s golf student-athletes who competed unattached in the event.
Weinberg made par on the first hole to win the playoff, after both he and Schaake finished 6-under par (210). Weinberg posted a bogey-free 5-under par 67 in the first round, and sank four birdies and an eagle in each of his final two rounds. Schaake was under par each round, draining six birdies in Sunday’s final round to reach the playoff.
“I felt really good mentally this week,” said Weinberg. “I did a great job focusing on the shot I was hitting and my mind didn’t wander to results or my score. I was also putting really well so it freed up the other areas of my game because I was confident on the greens.”
Schaake has played solid golf the last three weeks, finishing in the top five in three consecutive tournaments. The native of Omaha, Nebraska, previously finished third at the Zach Johnson Invitational (Sept. 29) and fourth at the Trinity Forest Amateur (Oct. 7),
Four of the top five finishers were from the University of Iowa. Sophomore Mac McClear and senior transfer Charles Jahn tied for fourth place, each posting a 3-over par 219.
Senior Jake Rowe tied for ninth place (+8, 224), while junior Gonzalo Leal Montero finished 18th (+11, 227). Sophomores Garrett Tighe (+19, 235) and Matthew Garside (+26, 242) finished 31st and 37th, respectively.
