Hawkeyes Sign Barbora Pokorna and Olivia Weiss

IOWA CITY, Iowa — University of Iowa women’s tennis head coach Sasha Schmid announced Tuesday that Barbora Pokorna and Olivia Weiss have signed letters of intent to join the Hawkeyes in August.

Pokorna, a native of the Czech Republic, has been ranked in the top 10 of the Czech Republic junior rankings throughout here career, and reached as high as No. 57 in the women’s national rankings.

“Attending University in the United States has been my dream since the age of 14 and I feel very grateful and honored to be part of the Hawkeye family,” Pokorna said. “I chose Iowa because of the incredible coaching staff, the state of art facilities, superior education and team spirit. I also love Iowa City and the beautiful campus. I am really looking forward to competing for the Hawkeye nation.”

“Barbora is a talented lefty and has an exciting tennis game,” said Schmid. “Her instinctive love of competing will be a great fit for college tennis where she gets to join a team and compete as a unit with her Hawkeye teammates. We are very excited to welcome her to campus.”

Weiss is a five-star recruit from Royal Oak, Michigan. She is ranked No. 55 in the class of 2021 by tennisrecruiting.net and has won four singles and 10 doubles tournaments on the national level. She has also won several Midwest singles and doubles tournaments, and has been recognized as a sportsmanship award winner on the national and Midwest levels.

“I am beyond excited and proud to tell everyone that I have committed to play tennis at the University of Iowa,” Weiss said. ““It has always been my dream to play tennis in the Big Ten Conference. “Olivia is all in,” Schmid said. “She has an enthusiastic commitment to excellence both on and off the court. It is very inspiring and I am excited to have her join our Hawkeye tennis family. Olivia has a full court tennis game that will impact our team both in singles and doubles.”
