IOWA CITY, Iowa – University of Iowa women’s tennis coach Sasha Schmid announced Thursday that Vipasha Mehra has signed a national letter of intent to join the Hawkeyes in August.
Mehra is from Prune, India and has a career high ITF junior ranking of No. 134. She is ranked number one in India’s U18 girls rankings. In January, she qualified for the 2020 Australian Open Juniors.
“Vipasha is a wonderful addition to our Hawkeye tennis family. We are thrilled to announce her signing with the University of Iowa,” Schmid said. “I am looking forward to Vipasha joining us this fall to begin her academic studies and her college tennis career in Iowa City as a Hawkeye. Vipasha is a very talented, experienced, and highly accomplished junior tennis player. Her well-balanced and full-court lefty tennis game will immediately make a positive impact on our team in the singles and doubles lineup. It will be exciting to watch Vipasha compete as a Hawkeye for the next four years.”
“In addition to her tennis abilities, Vipasha is an excellent and dedicated student who will thrive academically at the University of Iowa. And above all else, Vipasha has a kind and generous heart and she will be a lovely Hawkeye tennis teammate.”
“When I visited the campus, I instantly felt a connection with the place, the coaches, and my fellow teammates,” Mehra said. “I am excited to continue my tennis career at Iowa. The Big Ten Conference provides the perfect opportunity to test my capabilities and eventually move into the pro circuit. The University of Iowa will also provide me the perfect academic support as I move forward with my pre-meds. I can’t wait to move to my new home away from home for the next four years.”
