Hawkeyes Defeat Rutgers, 1-0

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The University of Iowa field hockey team (3-0) recorded its third-straight, 1-0, victory, defeating Rutgers (2-1) on Friday in a neutral site contest at the Virginia Beach Sportsplex.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Both teams set up strong defenses in the first quarter not giving up a single shot.

Iowa had opportunities to find the goal in the second quarter taking three shots, but kept Rutgers shotless.

In the third quarter both teams’ defenses battled, resulting in another shotless quarter.

Heading into the fourth quarter, the score was even, 0-0. The Hawkeyes put the pressure on Rutgers goalkeeper taking three shots. In the 54th minute of play, junior Lokke Stribos broke the silence. She notched an assisted goal from senior Ellie Holley and junior Leah Zellner off a corner from the top of the circle to put Iowa on top and win the matchup.

HEARING FROM HEAD COACH LISA CELLUCI

“We knew they would tackle us hard, so we had to have great strength on our receptions and have the ability to move the ball and pull them out of space. We put them under pressure in each quarter, stayed patient and chipped away until we found the back of the net. I was proud of our problem solving and resilience today.”
