Hawkeyes fall to Badgers, 3-2 

MADISON, Wisc. – The University of Iowa softball team was defeated by Wisconsin, 3-2, on Sunday afternoon at the Goodman Softball Complex.

Sophomore Kalena Burns was 3-for-3 with an RBI for the Hawkeyes. Senior Sarah Lehman got the start in the circle for the Hawkeyes and moved to 5-5 on the season with the loss.

HOW IT HAPPENED       

Wisconsin scored two runs in first inning after a double, a triple, and a sacrifice bunt.  The Hawkeyes responded in the second with a run. Grace Banes doubled to centerfield and Burns moved her over to third with a single. Aralee Bogar brought home the run with a sacrifice bunt.

Iowa tied things up with a run in the sixth inning. Denali Loecker singled up the middle. Zoe Schulte, running for Loecker, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Marissa Peek. Banes was hit by a pitch and the runners moved over on a passed ball. Burns scored Schulte and singled with a high chopper to second base.

Wisconsin won the game in the seventh after a single and a double.

HIGHLIGHTS         

  • Sarah Lehman pitched her ninth complete game of the season.
  • Kalena Burns matched a season high with three hits.
  • Riley Sheehy led the Hawkeyes on the weekend batting .444 and slugging .778.

The Hawkeyes return home to Pearl Field for a four-game series against Northwestern on April 16-18.
