Iowa City, Iowa — The University of Iowa men’s tennis team lost to No. 45 Northwestern, 6-1, Sunday afternoon at the Hawkeye Tennis & Recreation Complex.
Iowa (4-12, 4-10) started off with a convincing win from the 10th-ranked duo of Will Davies/Oliver Okonkwo, who posted their second straight win over a top 20 opponent, with a 6-1 triumph over Brookes/Bratholm (6-1). The Wildcats won the next two matches at No. 2 and No. 3 to clinch the doubles point.
Today’s doubles victory moved Davies (70) one shy of record-holder Will Vasos (2008-12) for career doubles wins (71).
Northwestern (12-5, 11-4) won five of the six singles, with the lone win for the Hawkeyes coming in at No. 3. Davies defeated Nick Brookes in straight sets (6-4, 6-2) to move into a seventh-place tie with Christian Bierich (2005-09) for seventh most singles wins in program history (72).
Iowa returns to action Friday against Wisconsin in Madison, Wisconsin.
