BETHEL, Ohio — The 16th-ranked University of Iowa rowing team competed at the Big Ten Invitational on Saturday and Sunday at Harsha Lake in Bethel, Ohio.
The weekend featured races against No. 3 Ohio State, No. 6 Michigan, No. 7 Alabama, No. 9 Tennessee, No. 11 Rutgers, No. 12 Indiana, No. 15 Wisconsin, No. 17 Minnesota, No. 20 Syracuse, Louisville, Michigan State, and Notre Dame.
The Hawkeyes’ Saturday morning-session races included a win from the II Varsity 8+ boat in flight 3. Iowa won by seven seconds over second-place Notre Dame. Additionally, Iowa took second in the I Varsity 8+ and I Varsity 4+ morning races. Iowa fell short to Notre Dame’s I Varsity 8+ crew by half a second and the Fighting Irish’s II Varsity 4+ boat pulled off a four-second victory.
The I Novice 8+ and II Novice 8+ boats each finished in third place, closing the respective races by a ten-second difference from the winning boats.
During the Saturday afternoon session, the II Varsity 8+ placed third in a six-second race from first to third with Michigan and Wisconsin. The I Novice 8+ also placed third, finishing nine seconds behind first-place Indiana.
On Sunday, the Hawkeyes’ II Varsity 8+ boat pushed past the competition to take the win by a second and a half. The I Varsity 8+ boat recorded a hard-fought race, finishing third but coming up only four second short from first-place Alabama. The I Varsity 4+ boat and II Novice 8+ boats also recorded close races, coming up eight and nine seconds behind, respectively.
