MINNEAPOLIS – The University of Iowa softball team was defeated, 9-4, on Sunday morning by No. 24 Minnesota at Jane Sage Cowles Stadium.
Sophomore Kalena Burns was 3-for-3 on the day for the Hawkeyes. Freshman Grace Banes hit her first career home run, a two-run blast to left center.
Freshman Denali Loecker drove in her sixth RBI of the weekend.
Senior Lauren Shaw got the start in the circle for the Hawkeyes, she moved to 5-3 on the season with the loss.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Minnesota scored two runs in the first inning on a home run. The Gophers added a run in the second on a single and a throwing error. They added two runs in the third with a pair of home runs. Iowa scored two runs in the fourth after Burns singled and Banes hit a home run. Minnesota added to their lead with a walk and a double in the fourth.
Iowa scored a run in the fifth after Klosterman singled, stole a base, advanced on a passed ball, and scored on a Loecker ground out. Minnesota scored three in the fifth after a single, a double, an intentional walk, and a double. Iowa scored a run in the seventh. Sammy Diaz reached on a throwing error, and advanced to second on a passed ball. Klosterman singled through the right side to plate Diaz.
