Hawkeyes Shutout Cornhuskers

IOWA CITY, Iowa – The University of Iowa softball team defeated Nebraska, 1-0, on Friday afternoon at Bob Pearl Field.

Senior Allison Doocy picked up right where she left off last weekend extending her streak to 10 innings without a hit before allowing the lone Nebraska hit in the sixth inning. Doocy struck out six batters and allowed only two walks in the complete game shutout to improve to 8-4 in the circle.

“Every game counts at this point,” said Doocy. “We are trying to get to the postseason. We are treating every game like it is the most important game because it is at this point. As well as trying to keep our momentum going, todays win just give us more momentum for tomorrow. Tomorrow’s game is just as important as todays. We need to take it one game at a time and continue to build on the last.

Junior Riley Sheehy was 2-for-3 on the day and had back-to-back catches in the outfield to end the game. Freshman Brylee Klosterman was 2-for-3 with an RBI triple. It was Klosterman’s seventh multi-hit game of the season.

“I just knew that I needed to do whatever I could to score that run,” said Klosterman. “We had runners in scoring position, and with Nebraska being a good team it was going to be a close game. I just wanted to do anything I could to score the run.”

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Hawkeyes scored first in the third inning as Aralee Bogar and Klosterman hit back-to-back triples. Nebraska had some action in the sixth inning as they collected their one hit of the day and drew a walk, but a 6-3 double play would end the threat. With the tying run on second for Nebraska in the top of the seventh Sheehy would make two catches in left field to put the game away.

HEAR FROM HEAD COACH RENEE GILLISPIE

“Last week being able to go strong on that Friday against Rutgers was huge for us, and then being able to go in and finish the sweep was important. Friday sets the momentum of the weekend. The doubleheader tomorrow is going to be a little earlier, but I think they are very focused on what they can do, and just taking it one game at a time. They are staying in the moment and that is where we need them right now.”
