Thomas Gilman Wins Olympic Bronze

MAKUHARI, Chiba, Japan – Former University of Iowa All-American Thomas Gilman won a bronze medal Thursday at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, becoming the 10th Hawkeye wrestler in school history to medal at the Olympic Games. Wins Bronze at Tokyo Olympics

Gilman dominated the bronze medal match, rolling to an impressive 9-1 win. He jumped to a 5-0 lead in the first period with a pair of takedowns and a push out. He added two more takedowns takedowns in the second, surrendering only up a stepout.

Gilman earned a spot in the medal round by rolling to an 11-1 technical superiority over Uzbekistan’s Gulomjan Abdullaev in the Repechage. He was bounced to the Repechage following a 5-4 loss to eventual Olympic champion Zavur Uguev of the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) in his opening round match-up. That match was not decided until the end, when Ugaev scored an exposure with five seconds left to flip a 4-3 deficit into a 5-4 lead.

Gilman is the first Hawkeye to medal at the Olympics since Terry Brands and Linclon McIlravy won bronze at the 2000 Sydney Games. Iowa’s 10 Olympic medalist include:
