Iowa Finishes 13th at Gopher Invitational

INDEPENDENCE, Minn. – The University of Iowa men’s golf team finished 13th at the Gopher Invitational on Monday, closing out the event at Windsong Farm Golf Club with a final round score of 297 (+13).

Junior Mac McClear posted Iowa’s best score on the day, shooting an even-par 71 in the final round. McClear got off to a hot start, sinking three birdies on a bogey-free back nine to start the day.

Iowa’s low finisher at the Gopher Invitational was freshman Ian Meyer. The Deephaven, Minnesota, native finished even-par through the first two rounds before posting a 77 (+6) on Monday to place 35th at the event in his home state.

13 Iowa 292 295 297 +32 884
T-35 Ian Meyer 71 71 77 +6 219
T-41 Gonzalo Leal Montero 71 73 77 +8 221
T-41 Mac McClear 76 74 71 +8 221
T-56 Callum Macfie 74 79 74 +14 227
T-67 Jake Rowe 79 77 75 +18 231

“Clearly our performance is short of what we expect as a team. We got off to a decent start but dropped far too many shots on the back nine. We had some good individual moments the first two events, but we need much more consistency. We will take the time off to address these areas and prepare for the Warren Course [at the Notre Dame Fighting Irish Classic].”

  • Senior Jake Rowe had Iowa’s only eagle at the event, carding an ace on the 180-yard par three seventh hole in the second round.
  • McClear led the Hawkeyes with 11 birdies at the Gopher Invitational, followed by Meyer (10), junior Gonzalo Leal Montero and sophomore Callum Macfie (eight), and senior Jake Rowe (six).

The Hawkeyes return to action Oct. 4-5 at Warren Golf Course for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish Classic in Notre Dame, Indiana.
