Black Team Prevails in Black & Gold World Series

IOWA CITY, Iowa – The Black team used a six spot in the fourth inning to pull away for a 10-4 victory to win the Black & Gold World Series on Tuesday afternoon at Duane Banks Field.

Redshirt sophomore Ty Snep hit a two-run homer in the first inning and the Black team got RBI singles from Brendan Sher and Sam Petersen in the second to jump out to a 4-0 lead.

After the Gold team got on the board via a Cade Moss RBI single in the second and climbed to within 4-3 courtesy of a Keaton Anthony sacrifice fly and a Will Mulflur RBI single, the Black team pulled away with a six-run fourth.

Petersen led the Black team going 3-for-4 with three RBIs, sophomore Anthony Mangano was 2-for-4 with a triple and Sher finished 2-for-4 with a home run.

Freshman Marcus Morgan allowed three hits and fanned two in the start for the Black team and senior Dylan Nedved logged 3 1/3 innings, allowing one run and striking out four. Jared Simpson and Ben Beutel combined for 1 2/3 innings.

The Gold team had seven hits with Michael Seegers (2-for-3, 2B) and Andy Nelson (2-for-3, 2B) collecting multi-hit games.

Freshman Chas Wheatley allowed one hit over two innings in relief to lead the Gold team.

The World Series marked the end of the fall season for the Hawkeyes. Iowa will open the spring season against Air Force at the Swig & Swine Classic in Charleston, South Carolina, on Feb. 18.
