IOWA CITY, Iowa – Every available player on the No. 9-ranked University of Iowa women’s basketball team scored in a 102-32 exhibition win over Truman State on Thursday night on Mediacom Court inside Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
“This was a really good start to our season,” P. Sue Beckwith, MD, head coach Lisa Bluder said. “I understand we played a Division II school tonight, but at the same time, I look back at our past years, and we had a good start tonight. We kept our focus, our energy, and our intensity the whole time, which is hard to do sometimes when you look at that scoreboard.”
Junior McKenna Warnock recorded a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds. All-American Caitlin Clark tallied 25 points to lead the team and was one assist and two rebounds away from recording a triple-double. Freshman Addison O’Grady tallied 19 points and six rebounds in her collegiate debut.
The Hawkeyes forced 15 turnovers, scoring off 13 of those. Iowa recorded 49 of their 60 rebounds on the defensive side and pulled in 11 offensive rebounds.
“I’m happy with our defense tonight,” said Bluder. “We did a good job, but also offensively, we had 26 assists and seven turnovers. Usually, you see a lot more turnovers early in the year when you don’t have your timing down, especially when you’re playing at the pace we play at.”
Iowa started the first quarter on a 22-0 run until Truman State scored its first bucket with only 3:05 minutes remaining. The Hawkeyes locked down on defense and held Truman State to 11 points in the first half.
Iowa opened the second half with two 3-pointers by Clark and Warnock and a jumper from Gabbie Marshall followed. The Hawkeyes kept up the pace, scoring four layups in a row from Monika Czinano, Warnock, O’Grady, and Logan Cook to bring the score to 78-26 at the end of the third.
In the fourth quarter, Iowa’s intensity continued, outscoring Truman State, 24-4, to clinch its 70-point victory.
