Hawkeyes Fall to Undefeated Duke

DURHAM, N.C. – The ninth-ranked University of Iowa women’s basketball team fell in its Big Ten/ACC Challenge against undefeated Duke, 73-64, on Thursday night inside Cameron Indoor Stadium. Sophomore Caitlin Clark and senior Monika Czinano finished with 22 points, nine rebounds, and eight assists, and 21 points, and six rebounds, respectively.

Iowa started the game on a six-point run. Junior Gabbie Marshall recorded two of her season-high four steals in the first quarter and forced eight turnovers.

‘We haven’t played in two weeks and a day,” said P. Sue Beckwith, MD, head coach Lisa Bluder. “We missed three games that were supposed to prep us for this team. This is not an Iowa performance that we are proud of and we need to regroup because we open up Big Ten play on Sunday.”

Redshirt junior Kate Martin had eight points, two assists and one steal in the first half to help decrease Duke’s, 36-28, lead going into halftime.

The Hawkeyes started the third quarter off with Czinano drawing a foul on a fast break and sinking both free throws to cut Duke’s led to six. The senior ended the quarter, adding seven points.

Clark put up 13 points in the fourth quarter for the Hawkeyes, but Duke prevailed, shooting 75 percent from the free-throw line to help come away with the win.
