Hawkeyes Fall to Cyclones in Iowa Corn CyHawk Series Dual

Ames, Iowa – The University of Iowa women’s swimming and diving team fell 191-79 to Iowa State on Friday night in Beyer Pool.

“We’re proud of how we competed tonight in this rivalry meet,” said Iowa head coach Nathan Mundt. “As we have throughout the season, we continued to show determination and fight. We look forward to continuing the Cy-Hawk Series in Iowa City next year.”

The meet commenced with a third place finish in the 200-medley relay from Iowa’s quartet of juniors Zoe Pawloski, Aleksandra Olesiak, Kennedy Gilbertson, and sophomore Maddie Black. Their 1:43.81 was the group’s best official time of the season. Black posted an individual season-best with her 23.64 in the 50-free portion of the relay.

Gilbertson continued to advance her times, posting three new season-bests. The Wisconsin native’s new highs came in the 200-free (1:52.88), 100-free (51.28), and 100-fly (55.93).

The Hawkeyes put on a show on both the 1 and 3-meter springboards. Senior Sam Tamborski placed first off the 3-meter, scoring a season-high 338.10. Sophomore Sarah Ballard had a breakout night by finishing second off the 3-meter with a season-high of 314.55, as well as another high and first place finish of 304.30 off the 1-meter.

Freshman Makayla Hughbanks also scored a season-high off the 1-meter with 277.20.

Iowa was runner-up in a total of seven swimming events. Gilbertson finished second in three races, the 100-free, 200-free, and 100-fly. Olesiak finished second in the 200-breast (2:21.25) and 200-IM (2:11.13). Junior Payton Lange came in second in the 500-free (5:19.05).

The Hawkeyes’ final event of the night was a second-place finish in the 400-free relay with a time of 3:35.66.

Iowa will return to action Jan. 15, traveling to Champaign, Illinois, for a Big Ten dual at Illinois.
