Hawkeyes Fall to Cyclones

URBANDALE, Iowa — The University of Iowa women’s tennis team fell to Iowa State, 4-0, in the annual Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series match on Friday at the Mckee Indoor Tennis Complex.

Iowa put up a fight in doubles, but the Cyclones captured the point by virtue of wins on courts one (6-4) and two (7-5). Sophomore Barbora Pokorna and senior Michelle Bacalla were tied, 5-5, at No. 3 when their match was called.

No. 118 Marisa Schmidt was in her third set against 33rd-ranked Thasaporn Naklo on court one after winning the first set, 6-3. The freshman lost the second set, 6-2, and was ahead, 1-0, in the third before going unfinished.

Senior Samantha Gillas dropped her first set, 6-4, at No. 5, but was ahead in the second match, 3-2, before her match was unfinished as Iowa State claimed four points to win match.

Bacalla, Pokorna, and sophomore Vipasha Mehra lost in straight sets on courts three, six, and four, respectively.

“Credit to Iowa State,” said head coach Sasha Schmid. “They competed really hard, and it was a tough match for us. We had chances in doubles but were unable to convert. We got behind early in some singles matches and kind of let the momentum take control of the match. At the end of the day, you have to give Iowa State a lot of credit. They’re good team, and we have to regroup and get ready to head to Denver and Colorado.”
