MANHATTAN, Kansas – The University of Iowa women’s tennis team fell to Kansas State, 4-3, on Friday afternoon at Mike Goss Tennis Stadium.
The Hawkeyes put up a fight for the doubles point as freshman Marisa Schmidt and senior Samantha Gillas captured a win on court two, 6-4, evening out the doubles score 1-1. The Wildcats cliched the doubles point by winning the decisive set 6-3 at the No. 3 position.
Kansas State captured the first two singles points in straight sets at the No. 1 and No. 2 spots before Iowa made a run with two straight wins.
Iowa’s first point was scored by Gillas at No. 5 singles over Kansas State’s Ioana Gheorghita in a straights sets, 6-2, 6-4. Freshman Barbora Pokorna followed with a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 6 singles againstr Kansas State’s Anna Turco.
Sophomore Vipasha Mehra nearly tied the match, 3-3, at No. 4 singles, but Kansas State’s Florentine Dekkers came out on top of a 4-6, 6-2, 6-0 three-set win to clinch the match for the Wildcats.
Senior Michella Bacalla closed the dual on a high for the Hawkeyes, winning a three-set tiebreak against No. 108 Rosanna Maffei at No. 3 singles, 7-6, 1-6, 1-0 (10-6).

“We really have seen a path to the fourth point in these matches but it hasn’t been something we’ve been able to capitalize on. We just have to remember we have more opportunities. As disappointing as it is to fall short, we have to rebound and keep out chins up because we have another great week head.”
