LAWRENCE, Kansas – The University of Iowa softball team was defeated by Wichita State, 14-3, in five innings on Monday afternoon.
Sophomore Denali Loecker got the start in the circle, taking the loss after throwing 2.1 innings and allowing nine runs (six earned).
Senior Riley Sheehy was 2-for-2 on the day. Loecker and sophomore Brylee Klosterman each tallied an RBI for the Hawkeyes.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Shockers scored three runs in the first inning on a home run, one walk, one single, and two errors. They added another two runs in the second on a two-run shot. Three Hawkeye errors and four hits extended the Wichita State lead to nine after the top of the third.
Iowa scored three runs in the bottom of the third. Sophomore Amber DeSena singled to shortstop and sophomore Sammy Diaz doubled to center field. DeSena scored on a wild pitch and Klosterman reached on an error to plate Diaz. Klosterman advanced to third after a wild pitch and a ground out by junior Nia Carter. Loecker then doubled down the left field line to score Klosterman.
Wichita State added five runs in the fourth with a run-scoring single and a grand slam.
