Hawkeyes Drop 8-Inning Battle With Gophers

IOWA CITY, Iowa – The University of Iowa softball team was defeated by Minnesota, 5-3, in eight innings on Saturday afternoon at Pearl Field.

Senior Breanna Vasquez got the nod in the circle for the Hawkeyes, throwing all eight innings and striking out three.

Five different Hawkeyes tallied a hit in the contest. Sophomore Brylee Klosterman and junior Nia Carter each notched an RBI for Iowa.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Minnesota opened the scoring in the second inning with two runs on four hits and an error.

Iowa scored a run in the third after sophomore Amber DeSena doubled to lead off the inning, Klosterman doubled to trade places with her and plate the run.

The Hawkeyes tied the game in the bottom of the fifth after DeSena and junior Sophia Maras drew back-to-back walks. Klosterman flew out and Carter singled up the middle to score freshman pinch runner Rylie Moss.

Back-to-back home runs in the top of the eighth inning gave Minnesota a lead they would not relinquish in the bottom half.

HEAR FROM HEAD COACH RENEE GILLISPIE

“I told them to keep their heads up. We had several opportunities to be in the game before we got to the eighth inning. We just have to take advantage of those opportunities they give us. Tomorrow is another day and it’s an opportunity to be able to take a series.”

UP NEXT

Iowa and Minnesota conclude their series tomorrow with first pitch scheduled for noon (CT). The game is the Strikeout Cancer Pink Game.
