PONTEVEDRA, Spain — University of Iowa senior Tony Cassioppi will compete on Saturday and Sunday at the UWW U23 World Championships in Pontevedra, Spain. The 2022 U23 World Championships are being held from Oct. 17-23 at the Pontevedra Municipal Sports Hall.
Cassioppi is representing the United States men’s freestyle team at 125 kg.
The Roscoe, Illinois, native opens the tournament Saturday at 3:30 a.m. (CT) with qualification rounds, where he will face Israel’s Llor Altshuler in his opening match. The semifinals are at 9:45 a.m. The repechage begins Sunday at 9 a.m. and the men’s freestyle finals are Sunday at 11 a.m.

Cassioppi earned his spot on the United States World Team after rolling through the 2022 World Team Trials in June. He went 7-0 and outscored his opponents 72-8, including 11-4 and 13-2 wins in the finals to claim his second straight U23 title.
In Pontevedra, Cassioppi is looking to defend his U23 World Title. Last season, Cassioppi won gold, winning all four of his matches, including two by fall, and he outscored his opposition, 38-8.
