IOWA CITY, Iowa – University of Iowa senior Anthe Nijziel has been named the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week, it was announced Monday by the league office. It is Nijziel’s seventh career weekly honor.
The Netherlands native earned the distinction after anchoring a Hawkeye defense that allowed just two shots (one on goal) in a 1-0 shutout victory over Michigan State on Oct. 28. The shutout was Iowa’s sixth of the season.
The honor is Nijziel’s second this season – she was honored on Sept. 12 – and the seventh of her career. She earned three accolades in 2021, one in the spring of 2020 and she garnered Big Ten Freshman of the Week honors in 2018.
Iowa has earned four Big Ten weekly honors this season, as Alex Wesneski (offensive) and Grace McGuire (defensive) were both recognized on Sept. 26.
The Hawkeyes open postseason play Thursday at the 2022 Big Ten Tournament in Columbus, Ohio. Fifth-seeded Iowa will play No. 4 seed Michigan in the quarterfinals beginning at 10 a.m. (CT). The game will be streamed live on B1G+.
