AUSTIN, Texas – Two University of Iowa wrestlers – Jacob Warner and Tony Cassioppi – competed at the NWCA All-Star Classic on Tuesday night at the FloSports Event Center.
Warner dropped an 8-6 sudden victory decision to Missouri’s Rocky Elam at 197 and Cassioppi fell to Penn State’s Greg Kerkvliet, 8-5, at heavyweight.
The meet is an exhibition event and the results do not count on any wrestlers NCAA record form or toward the season’s RPI.
In the fourth bout of the event, Warner trailed 5-2 midway through the third period before storming back. He had a reversal and late takedown in the final 10 seconds to force overtime. In the first 20 seconds of sudden victory, Elam’s third takedown of the match secured the victory.
In Iowa’s next match, Kerkvliet jumped out to a 5-1 lead midway through the second period with a pair of takedowns, but Cassioppi closed the gap to 5-3 with a late reversal in the period.
Cassioppi chose down to start the third and his escape cut the deficit to 5-4, but Kerkvliet followed with a takedown and his riding time point made it an 8-5 final.
The Hawkeyes return to action Saturday, hosting No. 21 Penn at 2 p.m. (CT) in Carver-Hawkeye Arena. The dual is sold out and will be streamed live on B1G+.
