ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The No. 16 Iowa women’s basketball team defeated No. 14 Michigan, 94-85, on Saturday afternoon inside the Crisler Center. The Hawkeyes are now 4-1 in conference play. It was the first Big Ten women’s basketball game to have ever aired on FOX.
Four Hawkeyes finished in double digits, as All-American Caitlin Clark led the team with 28 points and eight assists. Monika Czinano was the second leading scorer, registering 19 points, a career-high eight assists, and five boards. McKenna Warnock went 4-for-6 from beyond the arc to finish with 14 points, and Kate Martin had 10 points.
Iowa had a slow start in the first. Freshman standout Hannah Stuelke drove in for an and-1 layup in the final minutes of the quarter to tie it up at 16. She ended with nine points and four rebounds. The Hawkeyes would trail by two heading into the second.
The Hawkeyes went on a 10-0 run in the second. The duo of Clark and Czinano, combined had 16 of the team’s 23 points in the quarter. With nine seconds left in the half, Clark swished a deep-range three to take a 41-39, lead into the locker room.
Iowa had a big third quarter, outscoring the Wolverines, 25-18. Martin recorded all her 10 points in the third, having back-to-back three-point plays. The Hawkeyes went into the fourth with a nine-point lead.
Five players contributed to the stat sheet in the fourth, as the team went nine of 11 from the field. Michigan would come within seven, but Gabbie Marshall had a clutch three with a minute left to regain a 10-point lead. Molly Davis dished out three of her four assists in the fourth, as well as two free throws in the final seconds of the game to help the Hawkeyes come away with their first win inside the Crisler Center since the 2013-14 season.
