IOWA CITY, Iowa – University of Iowa redshirt senior Spencer Lee has been named the Big Ten Co-Wrestler of the Week, it was announced Wednesday by the league office. It is Lee’s fifth career weekly honor.
The Murrysville, Pennsylvania, native earned the distinction after recording two first-period falls last week in dual victories over Illinois and Purdue. They were Lee’s second and third consecutive pins this season, moving his record to 7-0 with seven bonus point victories.
Lee opened the weekend with a fall in 2:22 against Illinois’ Maximo Renteria and he followed it up with a 2:54 fall of Purdue’s ninth-ranked Matt Ramos. Lee fought back from an early 8-1 deficit in the first period to tie the match before eventually notching his fourth fall of the season.
In seven matches, Lee has wrestled seven minutes twice and he has been on the mat a total of 25:02.
The win over Ramos was Lee’s first over a ranked opponent this season and it ran his winning streak to 45 dating back to the 2018-19 season. Lee has 73 career bonus point victories amongst his 85 career wins.
Lee was previously recognized as the Big Ten Wrestler of the Week once during the 2017-18 season, twice (in consecutive weeks) during the 2020-21 campaign and once last season.
He is the second Hawkeye to earn the weekly distinction this season, joining junior Cobe Siebrecht, who was honored on Nov. 30. Lee shared this weekly honor with Illinois’ Zac Braunagel.
The second-ranked Hawkeyes (9-0, 2-0) return to action Friday, hosting No. 11 Northwestern at 8:05 p.m. (CT) on Mediacom Mat inside Carver-Hawkeye Arena. The dual will be televised live on ESPNU.
