FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – University of Iowa track and field opened day one of the Razorback Invitational from the Randal Tyson Track Center by posting 17 career-best marks on Friday.
Junior Tionna Tobias started the women’s pentathlon with the 60-meter hurdles, cruising to a second-place finish of 8.40, just one hundredth off of her personal record. Tobias tied her career best 1.65 meters (5’ 5”) in the high jump segment. In the shot put, she posted a new career best with a toss of 10.31 meters (33’ 10”).
Sitting in eighth place following the shot put, Tobias used a third place finish in the long jump (6.01 meters / 19’ 8.75”) and a mark of 2:30.88 in the 800-meter race to earn seventh place overall. Her compiled score of 3,919 points crushes her previous best and ranks her fourth all-time at Iowa in the women’s pentathlon.
Freshman Wisdom Williams improved her standing on Iowa’s all-time list, jumping to ninth following her new best toss of 15.38 meters (50’ 5.50”) in the women’s shot put.
Juniors Peyton Haack and Austin West began the day with the first four legs of the men’s heptathlon. Haack and West finished second and third with times of 6.92 and 6.98, respectively, to open the event in the 60-meter dash. West followed with a third-place finish in the long jump, setting a lifetime record of 7.47 meters (24’ 6.25”), while Haack placed fifth and jumped a new best of 7.17 meters (23’ 6.25”).
Haack then posted a personal record of 14.04 meters (46’ 0.75”) in the shot put to claim fourth. West followed, earning fifth with a toss of 14 meters (45’ 11.25”). The high jump concluded the first day of the men’s heptathlon. Haack soared 2.04 meters (6’ 8.25”), crushing his previous best of 1.95 meters (6’ 4.75”), to win the high jump. West tied his career best with a jump of 1.95 meters. The duo finished the first day of the men’s heptathlon in the top three, with Haack in second (3,336 points) and West (3,302 points) in third. The heptathlon concludes Saturday, beginning with the 60-meter hurdles at 10:15 a.m.
Iowa sent 12 sprinters to the starting blocks for the women’s 200-meter dash. Junior LaSarah Hargrove led the sprint group, while eight Hawkeyes followed with career bests.
Junior Khullen Jefferson led the Hawkeye men through the 200-meter dash, earning sixth overall with a time of 20.96. Fellow junior Austin Kresley opened his 2023 indoor campaign in the event, clocking 21.18.
