SARASOTA, FL – The University of Iowa rowing team competed in the second day of the Big Ten Invitational on Saturday morning at Nathan Benderson Park. The field consisted of No. 19 Alabama, No. 6 Brown, UCLA, UCF, No. 2 Duke, No. 20 Indiana, RV Iowa, No. 13 Michigan, Michigan State, Minnesota, No. 11 Ohio State, Rutgers, No. 15 SMU, Stanford, No. 18 Tennessee, and Wisconsin.
The Saturday session consisted of 1V4, 2V4, 3V4, 1V8, 2V8, 3V8, and 4V8.
Top placements of the morning came in the 1V8 and 1V4 squads. In the Varsity Eight, the Hawkeyes downed No. 18 Tennessee by seven seconds to finish in first. Varsity Four came in first place, finishing a whole three seconds ahead of their second-place finisher, UCF.
Iowa had the most first and second place finishes with seven, which was the best from teams within in the Big Ten Conference. Michigan State had a pair of first place finishes and Wisconsin zero.
The rest of the squads all came in second, as 2V8 finished with a time of 6:38.52. 3V8 fell short to Michigan State by .294 seconds to come in second with a time of 6:54.00. 4V8 had a time of 7:20.87 and 2V4 finished with a 7:25.99 time. 3V4 anchored the meet and finished with a 7:29.54.
Weather on Saturday was better than yesterday, with warm weather and slight cross-tail winds from 5-10 mph.
The Hawkeyes are back in action on April 15, traveling to Kansas City, Kan. to face the Kansas Jayhawks.
