IOWA CITY, Iowa – University of Iowa track and field’s Julien Gillum was named the men’s Big Ten Track Athlete of the Week, the conference announced Wednesday. The weekly honor is the first of Gillum’s career.
Gillum, a senior from Biloxi, Mississippi, finished second in the men’s 400 hurdles at the Desert Heat Classic in Tucson, Arizona, last weekend. Gillum crossed the line with a personal best 49.73 – the third fastest time in Iowa program history. He currently has the eighth-fastest time in the country and leads the Big Ten in the event.
Gillum was also a part of the men’s 4×400-meter relay that claimed the title in Tucson, winning the race in 3:04.16.
Gillum is the fourth Hawkeye to earn Big Ten Athlete of the Week honors this outdoor season, joining Jenoah McKiver, Lia Love and Kat Moody.
The Hawkeyes wrap up the regular season at the Iowa State Alumni Invitational this Saturday, before beginning postseason competition at the Big Ten Outdoor Championships in Bloomington, Indiana, May 12-14.
