University of Iowa volleyball hosts its 2023 home opener at the Fryfest Invitational. The Hawkeyes play Middle Tennessee State on Friday at 6 p.m. (CT), Kent State on Saturday at 6 p.m. (CT), and  South Dakota State on Sunday at 2 p.m. (CT) inside Xtream Arena in Coralville, Iowa.

SCOUTING MIDDLE TENNESSEE STATE

  • Chuck Crawford enters his seventh season at the head of the Blue Raiders.
  • The Blue Raiders return 10 players from last season including six starters. MTSU added two transfers in Laure Jansen and Erin Eisenhart, and three freshmen; Allyson Eckel, Allison Bedrick and Patrycja Labucka.
  • Right-Side graduate student Kayla Henley and outside sophomore Adri Rhoda were named to the preseason CUSA All-Conference team.
  • Middle Tennessee State finished last season 15-14 overall and 4-10 in conference play.
  • The Hawkeyes are the only Big Ten team the Blue Raiders will face this season.

SCOUTING KENT STATE

  • Haley Eckerman enters her second season at the helm of the Golden Flashes.
  • Kent State was picked fourth in the East Division in the 2023 Mid-American Conference Volleyball Preseason Coaches Poll.
  • Outside hitter Mackenzie McGuire is coming off her MAC All-Freshman campaign; she averaged of 3.01 kills and 1.39 digs per set.
  • Defensive specialist/libero Bryn Roberts is the only four-year member of the program, having played 247 sets and registered 722 digs in a Golden Flashes uniform so far.
  • Kent State finished 2022 with an overall record of 13-16, and a conference record of 4-14.

SCOUTING SOUTH DAKOTA STATE

  • Dan Georgalas enters his fourth season as the Jackrabbits’ head coach.
  • South Dakota State posted a18-15 record during the 2022 season that included the Jackrabbits’ first trip to the NIVC in program history.
  • Iowa swept SDSU, 3-0, during the Hawkeye Invitational last season.
  • SDSU returns three starters from last season; Raegen Reilly, Masa Scheierman and Elyse Winter.
  • The Jackrabbits’ roster features eight returners and seven newcomers. Of the newcomers, most notable of the group is the addition of Louisville transfer Sydni Schetnan.

 

ROSTER AT A GLANCE

  • The Hawkeyes’ roster includes student-athletes from Colorado (2), Connecticut, Illinois (2), Iowa (6), Nebraska, New York, Texas (2), Virginia, Wisconsin, and New Zealand.
  • The 2023 squad highlights five seniors, three juniors, four sophomores, and six freshmen.
  • Nine student-athletes are new to the Hawkeyes this season, including three transfers and six freshmen.

HAWKEYE TRANSFERS

  • Caitlan Buettner comes to Iowa from Texas State. The 6-2 outside hitter is a fifth year from El Paso, Texas.
  • Maddy Hanson came to the Hawkeyes from Denver. The sophomore middle hitter stands at 6-1 and is originally from San Antonio, Texas.
  • Nataly Moravec joins the squad from Brigham Young. Moravec stands at 6-2 as a sophomore outside hitter. Moravec calls Weston, Connecticut, home.

BEST CONFERENCE IN THE NATION

  • Six Big Ten teams finished the season ranked in the final top 20 AVCA Coaches Poll — No. 5 Wisconsin, No. 8 Ohio State, No. 9 Nebraska, No. 10 Minnesota, No. 11 Penn State, and No. 20 Purdue. 
  • The Big Ten Conference has crowned an NCAA Champion in 10 of the last 17 years and at least one Big Ten team has advanced to the Final Four in seven of the last eight seasons.
  • This season, six teams are ranked within the top 25 — No. 2 Wisconsin, No. 5 Nebraska, No. 7 Minnesota, No. 8 Penn State, No. 14 Ohio State, and No. 16 Purdue.
