The Hawkeyes host No. 1 Wisconsin, Oct. 4  at 7 p.m. (CT) inside Xtream Arena in Coralville, Iowa. The Hawkeyes then travel to West Lafayette, Indiana, to take on No. 19 Purdue on Saturday, Oct. 7 at 6 p.m. (CT) inside Holloway Gymnasium.

  • Iowa has had three athletes play in every set (59) so far this season; Michelle Urquhart, Delaney McSweeney, and Bailey Ortega.
  • Fifth-year transfer Caitlan Buettner is 35 kills away from the 1,000-kill milestone. She currently has 965 career kills.
  • Senior setter Bailey Ortega is 106 assists away from the 2,000-assist milestone. Ortega currently ranks 10th on Iowa’s all-time assists list with 1,894 career assists behind Jitka Stehnova (2,159; 2002-03).
  • Ten Hawkeyes have tallied at least one ace, but four are in double digits; Michelle Urquhart (33), Caitlan Buettner (12), Sydney Dennis (11), and Anna Davis (10).

SCOUTING NO. 1 WISCONSIN

  • Kelly Sheffield is in his 11th season at the helm of  the Badgers.
  • Sophomore middle blocker Carter Booth was named Defensive Player of the Week.
  • Wisconsin is currently 4-0 in Big Ten ball, sweeping Northwestern, Indiana, No. 22 Ohio State, and Michigan.
  • This is the Badgers sixth straight week at the top of the AVCA poll.
  • Wisconsin is 6-0 against ranked opponents this season, including No. 15 Baylor, No. 21 Arkansas, twice, No. 24 Tennessee, No. 3 Florida, and No. 22 Ohio State.
  • The Badgers added only three athletes to their roster this year; one freshman, DS/L Saige Damrow, and two Big Ten transfers; OH Temi Thomas-Ailara out of Northwestern, and MB Carter Booth out of Minnesota.
  • Wisconsin has had 10-straight NCAA Sweet 16-or-better tournament finishes.

SCOUTING NO. 19 PURDUE

  • Dave Shondell enters his 21st season at the helm of the Boilermakers.
  • Purdue is currently 8-5 overall and 2-2 in conference play. The Boilermakers’ Big Ten wins come from Maryland, 3-1, and Rutgers, 3-0. The conference losses came to No. 2 Nebraska, 2-3, and Northwestern, 2-3.
  • Junior middle blocker Raven Colvin leads the conference in total blocks (75), and is ranked 17th nationally.
  • The squad added six freshman this season, including the No. 1 recruit in the nation: outside hitter Chloe Chicoine.

 

2023 UPDATE

  • Iowa is 8-8 overall and 0-4 in Big Ten play, coming off road losses at Indiana, 0-3, and Illinois, 0-3. The Hawkeyes are 5-4 at home and 3-4 on the road.
  • Fifth year Caitlan Buettner ranks second in the Big Ten in total attacks (640) and 26th nationally.
  • Junior Michelle Urquhart currently ranks second in the conference in service aces (33) and ranks eighth  across the country, as well as second in aces per set (.56) in the Big Ten and 14th in the NCAA.
  • Redshirt sophomore Sydney Dennis currently ranks second in the league in total digs (231) and ranks 105th nationally.
  • Iowa leads the Big Ten in five categories: digs per set (15.34; 70th in NCAA), team assists (678; 110th in NCAA), team attacks per set (35.15; 92nd in NCAA), team digs (905; 74th in NCAA), and team total attacks (2,074; 90th nationally).
  • The Hawkeyes’ roster includes student-athletes from Colorado (2), Connecticut, Illinois (2), Iowa (6), Nebraska, New York, Texas (2), Virginia, Wisconsin, and New Zealand.
  • The 2023 squad highlights five seniors, three juniors, four sophomores, and six freshmen. Nine student-athletes are new to Iowa this season, including three transfers.

HAWKEYE TRANSFERS

  • Caitlan Buettner comes to Iowa from Texas State. The 6-2 outside hitter is a fifth year from El Paso, Texas.
  • Maddy Hanson came to the Hawkeyes from Denver. The sophomore middle hitter stands at 6-1 and is originally from San Antonio, Texas.
  • Nataly Moravec joins the squad from Brigham Young. Moravec stands at 6-2 as a sophomore outside hitter. Moravec calls Weston, Connecticut, home.

BEST CONFERENCE IN THE NATION

  • Six Big Ten teams finished the season ranked in the final top 20 AVCA Coaches Poll — No. 5 Wisconsin, No. 8 Ohio State, No. 9 Nebraska, No. 10 Minnesota, No. 11 Penn State, and No. 20 Purdue.
  • The Big Ten Conference has crowned an NCAA Champion in 10 of the last 17 years and at least one Big Ten team has advanced to the Final Four in seven of the last eight seasons.
  • Six teams are currently ranked within the top 25 — No. 1 Wisconsin, No. 2  Nebraska, No. 14 Penn State, No. 16 Minnesota,  No. 19 Purdue, and No. 24 Ohio State.
