IOWA CITY, Iowa – University of Iowa swimmers Scarlet Martin and Olivia Swalley were named Big Ten Athletes of the Week, the conference announced on Wednesday. Martin, a sophomore from Coralville, Iowa, was named the Big Ten’s Swimmer of the Week for the second time this season and third of her career. Swalley, a freshman from Johnston, Iowa, earned her fourth Big Ten Freshman of the Week honor.
In Iowa’s dual victory over Illinois, Martin won four events and helped set three pool records. Individually, Martin clinched the 100 fly with an ARC pool record of 54.75 before winning the 200-butterfly event in 2:01.95.
Additionally, the Hawkeye sophomore helped a pair of relay teams set facility records on their way to event victories. In the 400-medley relay, Martin and the Hawkeyes claimed the win in 3:45.54. Later, Martin anchored the final leg of the 400-free relay and finished in 3:25.84.
Swalley won four events in the dual against the Fighting Illini, beginning her day with the 100 breaststroke win in 1:03.48. The Hawkeye freshman notched her second victory in the 200 breaststroke, touching the wall in 2:16.86. Next, she won the 400 IM in 4:21.54. Swalley wrapped up her day as part of the 400-medley relay team that set an ARC pool record in 3:45.54.
The Hawkeyes return to action on Feb. 2-3 in West Lafayette, Indiana, for competition against Minnesota, Northwestern and Purdue.
