Hawkeyes Drop Road Dual at Denver

DENVER, Colo. — The University of Iowa women’s tennis team fell 4-1 at Denver on Sunday at the Denver Tennis Park.

The Pioneers captured the doubles point with wins on No. 1 and 2. The Hawkeye duo of junior Barbora Pokorna and sophomore Pia Kranholdt notched a win on court three, downing the Pioneers’ Alice Otis and Claudia Martinez de Velasco, 6-0.

Despite Denver capturing singles wins on No. 1, 2, 3 and 4, Iowa captured a win with Pokorna’s straight-set win over Otis on court five. Kranholdt led in the final set of her match against Martinez de Velasco, but the match went unfinished due to Denver sealing the clinching point.

QUOTING HEAD COACH SASHA SCHMID
“We’ve had four matches in a row that have all been pretty identical. I believe we are just in a tough stretch, and it is tough to be on the short side of these things. There’s nothing more we can do besides keep working hard. I think the team competed well today, and it comes down to a couple points in a 10-minute stretch where we have to have things go our way, and make things go our way. We will keep going and get ready for our home opener against Memphis.”

UP NEXT
The Hawkeyes will make their home season on Feb. 9, hosting a doubleheader against Memphis and Northern Illinois at the HTRC.
