IOWA CITY, Iowa – University of Iowa gymnast Eva Volpe has been named the Big Ten Freshman of the week. It was announced Tuesday by the conference. The honor is Volpe’s second of the season and her career.
The Pearland, Texas, native earned the distinction after competing in the all-around for the sixth time this season at Rutgers. Volpe set a new season-high for the fourth straight meet in the all-around, posting a 39.350. She helped the Hawkeyes to their first Big Ten win of the season defeating the Scarlet Knights, 196.300-195.325
Volpe started the night by recording a 9.825 on bars, taking third place on the event. She had a second-place finish on vault posting a season-best 9.850. On beam she led off with a strong performance scoring a 9.850, another personal-best.
The freshman is the only Hawkeye who has competed in the all-around event at every meet this season. Volpe is the only Hawkeye to earn Big Ten weekly honors this season with this being her second honor of the season.
The GymHawks return to action on Friday Feb. 16 at Carver-Hawkeye Arena. The Hawkeyes are set to host Ohio State at 6:30 p.m. (CT) for Senior Day. The meet will be streamed on B1G+ (subscription required).
