Walker Sets Iowa 100m Record at USF Alumni Invite

TAMPA, Fla. – University of Iowa track and field closed out competition at the USF Alumni Invite on Saturday. Senior Kalen Walker headlined the day with a new school record of 10.09 in the 100-meter dash.

The Hawkeyes came out blazing in the 100 meters. First, senior Lia Love and sophomore Holly Duax posted a 1-2 finish in the women’s race with wind-assisted times of 11.15 and 11.37, respectively.

Walker followed that up with his program-record of 10.09 to win the 100 meters.

“He’s proving to everyone that he is not just a great 60-meter runner,” said Director of Track and Field Joey Woody. “He showed that he can compete with the best in the 100 meters, also.”

Walker, whose previous best was 10.18, topped teammate Austin Kresley’s record set last season by one-hundredth of a second.

In the 4×100 meters, the group of Holly Duax, Lia Love, Julia Pattison and Alexandria Edison raced 44.54 for the 8th-best time in school history. The group placed fifth in the event.

Iowa combined for seven updates to the program top-10 lists this weekend.

Senior Gratt Reed was another winner for Iowa on Saturday with a time of 13.67 in the 100-meter hurdles.

HEAR FROM DIRECTOR OF TRACK AND FIELD JOEY WOODY
It was another great day for our men’s and women’s programs. Kalen picked up right where his indoor season left off with a big PR and school record in the 100 meters. 10.09, wind legal as a season opener is super impressive.

“I thought the women’s short sprints had a terrific day, as well, with Lia and Holly going 1-2 in the 100 meters. Unfortunately, the wind was over what is allowed for NCAA qualifying purposes, but it was a great testament to where they are both at in their training.

“Gratt Reed led the men’s hurdle group with a great season opener and one of the best times of his career. He executed his race very well and came out with a win in a very competitive field.”
