BOSTON – Three University of Iowa Track and Field athletes closed out the indoor season as second team All-Americans on Friday at the NCAA Championships. Three Hawkeyes runners advanced to Saturday’s finals at the TRACK at New Balance.
A pair of former Indian Hills Community College standouts headlined the Iowa effort on Friday. Junior Rivaldo Marshall qualified automatically in 800 meters, emerging with the top prelim time at 1:47.21. Senior Kalen Walker qualified automatically with a 6.60 time in the 60-meter semifinals. Walker won his heat and finished second overall in the qualifying round.
In the heptathlon, senior Austin West got off to a hot start, finishing the day in fifth place with 3,309 points (-355) through four events. Consistency was key for West, who finished ninth or better in each Friday’s heptathlon events.
Iowa’s second-team All-Americans include long jumper Tionna Tobias, along with 60-meter hurdlers Grant Conway and Paige Magee.
In the men’s 60-meter hurdles, Conway ran 7.81 to place 15th at the national meet. Magee placed 14th with an 8.41 time.
Tobias closed out the night with a 9th-place jump of 6.32 meters (20’ 9”), good for her second-best mark on the season. Tobias previously finished ninth in the long jump at Big Ten Indoors this season.
